Phu Quoc Transportation, how to travel Phu Quoc

Getting there

The main jumping off point for Phu Quoc is Rach Gia. Planes are reasonably frquent from the airport And there are boats from the harbour twice daily at 8.30 a.m. and 13.30 p.m. This takes about 2 and 1/2 hours to get to An Thoi at the sourthernmost tip of the island. Price around 5$ one way. You can of course get a 'plane directly to and from HCMC. that arrives at Duong Dong airport.

Ferry Experience!
The ferry leaves from Rach Gai and takes about 7hrs, arriving in An Thoi. The locals will string up hammocks - pretty cool. The ferry is made of steel and appeared fairly ship worthy.

Vietnam Airline
The most convenient way to get to Phu Quoc is by plane. Departing from Tan Son Nhat Airport, it takes around 1 hour to get there. From the plane you can see how blue the sea is and the great curve along the beach. However, the fare there is considered expensive (domestic flight is expensive). My return ticket was around 1,200,000 dong.

Vietnam Airlines is the best bet
There are two ways to get to Phu Quoc. You can take a boat from the mainland or you can fly. It is cheaper to buy your airline ticket in Vietnam from a local travel agent (Hanh Cafe in HCMC is good), than it is to buy it overseas! The flight takes about an hour from HCMC. Phu Quoc airport is a modern little terminal, but it only stirs with activity when a plane lands or takes off! A return flight to Phu Quoc could cost you about $US70 from HCMC, or so I was quoted.

There and around
The flight to Phu Quoc takes just under an hour and the airport is a 10 minute drive away from the main beach. we paid $80 each return through a tour company before we left for Vietnam which isa maybe a bit more than the going rate. Theres about 4 flights a day and it seems easy to book them once you get to Vietnam. Be prepared to drive or hop on the back of motorbikes to get around the island. Hold on as the roads are not smooth!
